“I remain convinced in principle, video games cannot be art.”
-Roger Ebert, Film Critic
“Are games art or aren’t they? Nobody need answer. Games are beautiful and important, we can leave it there and know we are right.”
-Keith Stuart, Author & Journalist
We are MasterWorks.
Video games as art. It almost seems quaint to consider nowadays, now that games currently are the pop culture phenomenon that grows exponentially in exposure every year. Nevertheless, the discussion points at a larger truth – attempting to figure out where games fall in the greater sense of how we tell stories, experience emotion and connect with one another. For MasterWorks, we feel like interactive media is central to this evolution, and are driven by new ways of exploring this dynamic. This is made manifest by a wide range of current projects that we are currently developing, from traditional media (film/tv/books), games and everything in between.

As for gaming’s past, we take a lot of inspiration from film studies, and how scholars not only explore an actual film, but the context that surrounds it – the filmmaker, their inspirations but also the wider world and how it informs their work. This type of introspection is still sorely lacking in an industry that is now over 40 years old, but presents an incredible opportunity. With this foundation, we look to build towards the future, and explore the various possibilities of the medium, and breathing new life in its approach. MasterWorks is a collection of like-minded individuals that recognize the importance of games in our lives, and its incredible potential to connect us all.
